Another recent project that I produced for the University of Washington Bothell was a short wrap-up of a big annual event held for all of the new freshmen that have been admitted for the fall. Not all of them have chosen to accept their admittance yet, so the event is a chance for the prospective students to learn more about the campus, meet each other, and decide if UW Bothell is the place for them. It was a beautiful day and a fun event so have a look at the video above.
I recently produced a series of short videos about three outstanding graduating seniors at the University of Washington Bothell, each of whom was to receive a big award at the commencement ceremony. Jeb Pavleas and Chris McRae each won a Chancellor’s Medal and Chris Duong won the President’s Medal. They all have fascinating stories and are, of course, very very talented. For each student, after a short introduction on stage at the ceremony, my video was shown and the student was presented with their award. It was humbling to work with these three talented individuals and it was also cool to see my work on a big screen in front of thousands of people at the UW’s Alaska Airlines Arena on the Seattle campus. I recently finished a new video project for UW Bothell that I think you will enjoy. It’s an uplifting piece about the value of scholarships and how private giving can change someone’s life.
I’m happy to share the second installment of the With Nature in Mind video series I am working on for the University of Washington Bothell and Cascadia Community College in partnership with Jim Perich-Anderson. UWB/CCC has an inspiring staff that is leading the way in organic gardening and landscape management. They have completely phased out pesticides and herbicides while using goats, composting, and a host of other solutions to create a beautiful campus. The music for the video was composed by UW Bothell recruiter and musician Ramon Stephens. I am especially proud of this great campus because I am an alumnus of UW Bothell’s Master of Arts in Cultural Studies program.

This week in Breaking Barriers, the McKnight Middle School students prepared for a Martin Luther King, Jr. assembly and selected several of their peers to represent them and speak in front of the school at the assembly.
Breaking Barriers is an outstanding outreach program created by the UW Bothell Diversity Recruitment and Outreach office. Led by UW Bothell administrator Anthony Kelley and McKnight Middle School administrator Arty Christiano, several UW Bothell students run weekly workshops for groups of young male students at McKnight Middle School in Renton, Washington near Seattle. In supporting underrepresented populations, the program ends up working with mainly African American and Latino youth. In total, about 60 middle school students are participating in the program, which aims to develop leadership and communication skills. The program is also designed to transform the culture and teaching practices of the middle school in order to better serve underrepresented populations. It is a unique program and I really like it because it gives a voice to the students in a dialogue about how the school can better support them. I am making photos and filming some of the project, while advising UW Bothell student Amen Mengesha in his production of periodic video updates for the parents and a documentary film that will be finished at the end of the school year. I recently created a video for the University of Washington Bothell that tells the story of two outstanding Computer and Software Systems students and a professor. They are developing a computer program that allows high school teachers to use the motion and voice capabilities of the Microsoft Kinect video game system in order to enrich the high school mathematics learning experience. I recently directed a short film in partnership with producer Jim Perich-Anderson about the wetlands restoration project on the UW Bothell/Cascadia College co-located campus. The film highlights the remarkable transformation of a once heavily degraded wetland – which was essentially just a cow pasture – into an outstanding educational and environmental resource. For an upcoming project, I filmed the gardening crew at UW Bothell doing their seasonal decoration of the big W on campus. Have a look, and stay tuned for the final project … more info coming soon. I created this with a Canon 5D mark II, 70-200 f/4 lens, tripod, and Final Cut Pro X.
I’m working with the Diversity Recruitment & Outreach team at UW Bothell again, this time to document a special project at McKnight Middle School in Renton, Washington. UW Bothell student volunteers are spending time with the middle school students each week to build leadership and communication skills as well as self and cultural awareness. The volunteers are also facilitating conversations about how McKnight Middle School can better serve these students and set them up for success in college and beyond. The middle school student group consists of mostly African American and Latino young men, which are largely underrepresented groups on college campuses. Programs like this one can hopefully change that. It really is a remarkable program.
At the end of the year we will be producing a short documentary film that explains what we were able to accomplish. In the meantime, you can watch the first video installment of a series of updates about this outreach work. I am doing some of the filming, taking photographs, and most importantly mentoring a UW Bothell senior, Amen Mengesha, who is the director of the project. He is a media production star of the future, so be sure to watch that first video installment here, or below, to see what he created. I’ve included some of my photographs from week two below.
UW Bothell hired me to produce a short film at their commencement ceremonies again this year. For you techie types out there, I used a Canon 5D mark II on a monopod to shoot most of the footage, and my lens throughout the day was generally a Canon 24-70 f/2.8. I cut the project on Final Cut Pro 7, probably my last project on their version 7 before I switch over to using strictly Final Cut Pro X … but we’ll see.
It was a long day of filming, during which I also broadcasted the ceremony live online with the assistance of Seattle photographer Karlie Roland. I was exhausted after the long day but very happy with the results. A funny side note: I too was graduating this year with a Master of Arts in Cultural Studies, so I got to film my own ceremony. Keep an eye out for the folks who are in my graduating cohort (bonus points if you can spot them. I managed to avoid being in the film myself!).

This is a short one-minute trailer for an upcoming project on the wetlands restoration project at the co-located campus of the University of Washington Bothell and Cascadia Community College. This was my first project using Apple’s newly released Final Cut Pro X, which I actually enjoyed using. Many people had other things to say about the new software. Anyway, have a look at the trailer!
