UW Bothell Diversity Video | Seattle Photographer David Ryder

Diversity, Multimedia, My work, Published work, University of Washington, UW Bothell, Video

I’m happy to present a video that I recently created for the University of Washington Bothell about the commitment to diversity on campus. I believe that the Bothell campus is doing a great job in becoming a leader of diversity recruitment, outreach, and retention. Please have a look at the video below:

Photos: Breaking Barriers – Martin Luther King – Seattle Photographer

My work, Seattle, Still photography, University of Washington, UW Bothell

This week in Breaking Barriers, the McKnight Middle School students prepared for a Martin Luther King, Jr. assembly and selected several of their peers to represent them and speak in front of the school at the assembly.

Breaking Barriers is an outstanding outreach program created by the UW Bothell Diversity Recruitment and Outreach office. Led by UW Bothell administrator Anthony Kelley and McKnight Middle School administrator Arty Christiano, several UW Bothell students run weekly workshops for groups of young male students at McKnight Middle School in Renton, Washington near Seattle. In supporting underrepresented populations, the program ends up working with mainly African American and Latino youth. In total, about 60 middle school students are participating in the program, which aims to develop leadership and communication skills. The program is also designed to transform the culture and teaching practices of the middle school in order to better serve underrepresented populations. It is a unique program and I really like it because it gives a voice to the students in a dialogue about how the school can better support them. I am making photos and filming some of the project, while advising UW Bothell student Amen Mengesha in his production of periodic video updates for the parents and a documentary film that will be finished at the end of the school year. Stay tuned! See photos below and more in this older post.

Teaching Math With Microsoft Kinect

Multimedia, My work, Published work, Tech stuff, University of Washington, UW Bothell, Video

I recently created a video for the University of Washington Bothell that tells the story of two outstanding Computer and Software Systems students and a professor. They are developing a computer program that allows high school teachers to use the motion and voice capabilities of the Microsoft Kinect video game system in order to enrich the high school mathematics learning experience. Have a look at the short film below:

UW Bothell – Wetlands Video – Cascadia Community College

I recently directed a short film in partnership with producer Jim Perich-Anderson about the wetlands restoration project on the UW Bothell/Cascadia College co-located campus. The film highlights the remarkable transformation of a once heavily degraded wetland – which was essentially just a cow pasture – into an outstanding educational and environmental resource.  Have a look at the film below and check out the UWB/CCC building dashboard website, where the film is featured.

UW Light Box Displays

Diversity, Graphic Design, My work, Other people's work, Published work, Seattle, Still photography, University of Washington

It was a great pleasure to finally see my work on the walls of Mary Gates Hall at the University of Washington last week, part of a light box installation that I designed and photographed over the summer. You might have seen periodic blog posts featuring the portraits and other photos I had been working on, which are now featured in the large 3′ x 5′ light boxes in the Center for Experiential Learning and Diversity. I shot most of the photos in the displays and designed the layout as well, which turned out to be a lot of fun. The Center approached me last spring because they were moving to a new office space and they wanted a bright, colorful, display with photos that featured a lot of natural light and outdoor scenes, while also telling the story of their programming and outstanding students. I think the project turned out amazing and I’m especially happy with the final quality of the printing. The detail and texture of a light box is really unique – something that I don’t often get to see with my photos.

New Short Film: UW Bothell Commencement 2011

Diversity, Multimedia, My work, Published work, University of Washington, UW Bothell

UW Bothell hired me to produce a short film at their commencement ceremonies again this year. For you techie types out there, I used a Canon 5D mark II on a monopod to shoot most of the footage, and my lens throughout the day was generally a Canon 24-70 f/2.8. I cut the project on Final Cut Pro 7, probably my last project on their version 7 before I switch over to using strictly Final Cut Pro X … but we’ll see.

It was a long day of filming, during which I also broadcasted the ceremony live online with the assistance of Seattle photographer Karlie Roland. I was exhausted after the long day but very happy with the results. A funny side note: I too was graduating this year with a Master of Arts in Cultural Studies, so I got to film my own ceremony. Keep an eye out for the folks who are in my graduating cohort (bonus points if you can spot them. I managed to avoid being in the film myself!).

Well, have a look at the project below!

UW Botanic Gardens

My work, Published work, Still photography, University of Washington

Continuing my portrait project for the University of Washington … The gardens at the Center for Urban Horticulture are quite impressive, thanks to the leadership of staff member Riz, at right, and help from volunteers like graduate student Jake, at left. As an alumnus of the University of Washington, I was a bit embarrassed to have never before set foot in the CUH or the nearby Union Bay Natural Area (both fall under the umbrella of the UW Botanic Gardens, which also includes the Washington Park Arboretum). The CUH and UBNA would both be great ways to spend an afternoon or even host a wedding or a party if you’re so inclined.

Seattle Tilth & Garden Volunteering in Seattle

My work, Still photography, University of Washington

Continuing my project shooting for the University of Washington … student researchers and interesting experiential learning projects …

This afternoon I was at Seattle Tilth shooting student volunteers preparing for the annual plant sale in Issaquah, one of Tilth’s many plant sale events. Seattle Tilth is an awesome organization, of which I happen to also be a member.

Literacy through photography

Diversity, My work, Published work, Still photography, University of Washington

With these photos I’m continuing the project of documenting UW student researchers and experiential learning for the University of Washington. This is what the Literacy Through Photography program looks like. It’s great because UW students visit a local elementary school, teach photography, and help the students develop writing skills by having them write about their photos. The young photographer-scholars also learn about ideas of self, community, communication, family and dreams.

Another University of Washington Student Portrait

Diversity, My work, Still photography, University of Washington

University of Washington undergraduate Vanessa is studying b-girls and the ways in which these female breakdancers negotiate the male-dominated culture of breakdancing. We scheduled a shoot with a great graffiti wall to serve as the backdrop. Everything at the shoot was perfect, Vanessa was a great model and the graffiti looked awesome, but after 30 minutes of waiting … our two b-girl models were nowhere to be found! We made do with what we had and I think the photos will still look great in serving their purpose, which is to highlight outstanding student researchers and add color and natural light to the newly remodeled office space where they will be displayed. I’m looking forward shooting the rest of this project, so stay tuned to see the other students that I photograph.
