The Duwamish Tribe

Diversity, My work, photojournalism, Seattle, Still photography

The first people of Seattle and much of King County, the people of the Duwamish Tribe, have been fighting for federal recognition for decades. Chairwoman Cecile Hansen has been leading that fight, and recently there was a breakthrough when a federal judge threw out a 2001 Bush-era denial and ordered a new examination of the tribe’s case. Hansen is a descendant of Chief Seattle, after whom the city is named. She is seen working below in her office at the Duwamish Longhouse while reflected in a painting done by her sister, Catherine Rivera, depicting their great-great-grandmother, Ya-Tse-Blu, the niece of Chief Seattle. Stay tuned for more as I continue to work to tell this important story. Thanks for looking.

Below, Cecile cooks dinner for a nearby homeless community, Nickelsville, with help from her granddaughter Alyssa.

Sanctuary Art Center

Diversity, My work, photojournalism, Seattle, Still photography

Sanctuary Art Center changes lives of homeless youth through art and creativity, and I recently started working with the center to document some of their work. The center operates two spaces, including a gallery in Seattle . The pictures below are during a gallery show at the downtown Seattle space, where screen-printed shirts are also on sale.

Portraiture for WWISH

My work, Seattle, Still photography

Women’s Wellness and Integrated Social Health (WWISH) is an organization that runs workshops for incarcerated women. They do some great things to support the women and prepare them for their lives inside and outside of prison. Below is a portrait of the founder of WWISH, Laura Pavlou. Stay tuned for updates on a very interesting documentary film currently in the works!

Photos: Hugo Chavez Funeral

My work, photojournalism, Still photography, Travel

I spent the day documenting a unique and emotional moment in the history of Venezuela and world politics today. Thousands of supporters gathered outside the Military Academy of Venezuela, where leaders from all over the world were present for the funeral of Hugo Chavez.

Shot on assignment for Zuma Press.

Photos: Pro-gun Activists Rally in Olympia, Washington

My work, photojournalism, Published work, Still photography

This weekend I covered a pro-gun rally at the state capitol in Olympia, Washington for Getty Images. The “Guns Across America” movement included rallies in capitals all over the nation on Saturday, January 19, 2013. I was glad to be covering something like this while the gun issue is such a hot button issue nationally. Over 1,000 people showed up to demonstrate and listen to speakers on the lawn in front of the capitol building. See more pictures here on the Getty site.
